Throw Fun 50th Kids Birthday Parties

A 50th birthday is a milestone. Friends and family members of those who are turning 50 often want to celebrate in a big way. Such a party requires much planning. If you're putting together a 50th birthday party, consider the guest-of-honor's tastes and your budget. Then get creative with decorations, food and activities.

Instructions

1. Choose a theme. For a 50th birthday, your guest of honor may enjoy a 50s theme, complete with Elvis and Bill Haley music, circle skirts, greased-back hair, burgers and tuna-noodle casserole. A childhood party, with rememberd games and sweets can be fun. Although over-the-hill parties are relatively common, most guests enjoy them, and they are easy to put together because of the wealth of supplies available at party stores.

2. Find a party venue if your house isn't big enough for all of your guests. Many hotels have affordable party rooms, as do many restaurants. An alternative is renting a tent and tables for a backyard party.

3. Design invitations based on the theme chosen. Include all the relevant information for the party, such as the venue and time. Make sure you specify the dress code if you're planning a '50s party.

4. Choose decorations based on the theme. If you're planning a '50s party, consider black-and-white checked tablecloths with pink or turquoise accents. If you want to be really extravagant, rent a jukebox and a Coke machine. If you're planning an over-the-hill party, look for tablewear at party-supply stores. If you're sure the guest of honor has a sense of humor, consider checking out secondhand stores for broken-down items, such as old televisions, transistor radios, alarm clocks and battered cookware. Display them on table with a banner that reads, "Also Over the Hill."

5. Select some party activities to help keep things fun and interesting. If it's a '50s party, let guests dance to music popular in the day and play a game of trivia. If you're throwing a childhood party, play jump rope and hopscotch. Tweak your over-the-hill theme by playing a game of What Gets Better When You're Over the Hill. The guest with more betters than anyone else wins.

6. Supply party guests with enough to eat and drink. Think of foods and drinks that work well in a 50th birthday party. Try going with aged cheese or wine from the birthday person's year of birth. For a '50s party, go with food that was popular in that decade. For a childhood party, have cotton candy, suckers and bubblegum.

7. Hand out party favors that fit the party theme. Consider sunglasses or Cola glasses for a '50s party. For an over-the-hill party, consider giving candy bars that have personalized wrappers with the guest of honor's name and birth date. For a childhood party, send guests home with a bag of sweet treats.
