Windham, Maine, is a northwestern suburb in the Greater Portland area, and is only a 10-minute drive from sailing and canoeing activities on Sebago Lake. Most of the town's restaurants are located right off Roosevelt Trail in the North Windham village, which offers immediate access to the lake and is within five minutes of the town's shopping centers.
Buck's Naked BBQ
Buck's Naked BBQ is a casual restaurant located off Roosevelt Trail in the southern area of North Windham. The restaurant is open for lunch and dinner every day of the week. Buck's is lodged in a converted three-story house and is known for its lively, jovial atmosphere. Its wood walls are covered with rustic barn-style memorabilia and makeshift chandeliers hang over the booths. The basement is home to the "Crooked House" play center where children can play while they're waiting for their food. The main floor has a full-service bar, a popular hangout for Windham's locals that serves imported beers and margaritas, according to "Maine Today." Sandwich items on the menu include the "Pig in a Dog Bed," a foot-long frank with pulled pork, and the char-grilled sliced sirloin steak. A variety of BBQ platters are available, including baby-back ribs, island jerk chicken and pit roasted chicken. The restaurant's signature "naked" barbecue is smoked without sauce, but is seasoned with Buck's homemade seasoning, "Rub Love," which is applied while the meat is smoking.
Charlie Beigg's Dining Spirits
Situated in the North Windham village, Charlie Beigg's is less than a mile north of the Tandberg Trail freeway, and is open for lunch and dinner every day of the week. Open since 1988, the restaurant is housed in a 1930s brick building that was once the North Windham Fire Station. The history of the firehouse is visible to patrons in the restaurant's pub area, Firehouse Tavern, which feature photographs of firemen who worked at the station. In 2009, the Firehouse Tavern was given the "Best Happy Hour" award by the Sebago Lakes Region Independent Business Awards. Charlie Beigg's main dining room offers a casual atmosphere for families, and during the warm late spring and summer months, seating is available in the restaurant's outdoor deck area. Private parties are hosted in the restaurant's private dining room, which features a fireplace and Christmas tree during the holidays. The lunch menu offers baked haddock fillet and Mediterranean pasta, while dinner entrees include grilled salmon and seafood scampi. "Early Bird" dinner specials are provided for patrons who come from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m., as of fall 2010.
The Landing Restaurant
The Landing Restaurant in North Windham has a marina-style restaurant with arched windows in the dining room and a wooden dock patio for outdoor dining. This seafood restaurant serves lunch and dinner every day of the week. The Landing Restaurant also features a lounge, which includes a full-service bar open until 11:00 p.m., as of fall 2010, a music jukebox and games, including the Golden Tee 2010 golf arcade game, a Nintendo Wii game console and a dartboard. Live events, such as karaoke nights and live music from local bands, occur at the restaurant throughout the year. Fried seafood combo platters include two of the following selections: haddock, clam, scallop and shrimp. The menu also features steak and chicken entrees, such as chicken marsala and sirloin steak.
Gilbert's Chowder House
Gilbert's Chowder House is located on the Tandberg Trail in North Windham, approximately five minutes from the North Windham Shopping Center. This seafood restaurant offers lunch and dinner every day of the week. The dining room has wooden walls and floors and is decorated with boating equipment and other nautical-themed memorabilia. The restaurant also offers concierge services for groups who want to take tours of the southern Maine area by providing parking for RVs and arranging tours. Outdoor patio seating is available. The menu includes entrees such as whole belly Maine clams, a lobster dinner and the seafood platter, which includes haddock, shrimp, clams and scallops. Gilbert's Chowder House is also reputed for their chowder. "The Portland Press Herald" praises the restaurant's five types: clam, fish, seafood, seafood chili and corn with chicken. One beverage of note on the menu is Capt'n Eli's Root Beer, a soft drink locally brewed in Maine.
