If you have an MP3 player other than an iPod, then Windows Media Player is a great way to manage your content. The software is capable of talking to most players and works with a variety of file formats. WMP provides one stop shopping for ripping CDs, labeling and cataloging your music files, burning recordings to disc, purchasing music online, downloading podcasts and loading it all onto your player. Best of all, it won't cost you a cent.
Instructions
1. Go to the Windows Media homepage and download Windows Media Player 11 if you do not have it on your computer already (see Resources below).
2. Follow the instructions for installing the software.
3. Familiarize yourself with the structure of the program, and the online help. It is worth taking a few minutes to do this, as you will find many answers to your technical questions here.
4. Click the "Library" tab at the top of the screen. The library is the heart of the program. Right now it is empty, but you can see the file structure on the left side of the screen. Once you put music in the library, it will automatically be sorted according to Artist, Album title, Song Title, Genre, Year and other categories. You may also edit the labels on the actual music files if they do not fit together the way you like. Everything in your library may be transferred in whole or in part to your MP3 player. You can back up your collection by burning it to CD or DVD-ROM.
5. If you already have music on your computer, click the "File" drop-down menu at the upper left side of the screen. Now click "Add to Library." A new menu will appear from which you may point the program to locations on your hard drive containing music. You may select as many folders as you like. Each time you do, the music in each folder will be included as a part of your Library.
6. Click on the "Rip" tab at the top of the screen. Here you can copy music from your personal CD collection into your library. Once imported, you can transfer the music to your player, or just listen to it on your computer.
7. Click on the "Sync" tab. This is where you manage the transfer files from your Library to your MP3 player. Plug in your MP3 Player. After a few moments you should see an icon for it appear on the right hand of your screen. Below the icon you will see your Sync List.
8. Select an album or music file from your library on the left side of the screen. Highlight it with your mouse and then drag it across the screen and drop it into the "Sync List." Everything you drop into the Sync List will be loaded onto your player when you sync it. You may do this with individual items or your entire library.
