Kitchen Designing Tips

If you spend a lot of time in your kitchen, liven up the decor by using bright pops of color, such natural elements as wrought iron and stone, or vintage textiles. Save money by breathing new life into antiques to create eye-catching and decorative items. Choose a theme to create a cohesive look throughout the space. If you are on a budget, replace small items, such as faucets, for an updated look.

Tuscan Theme

A Tuscan theme, which incorporates elements of wine, grapes and Italian herbs, is ideal for the kitchen. Use a rough-hewn wood dining table, reminiscent of those used in Italian farmhouses.

Hang strings of purple grape-shaped lights around doorways and windows to provide a soft lighting option during dinner parties. Use vintage wine bottles to hold fresh-cut or dried flowers. Using craft paint, enhance olive oil bottles with grape and vine designs.

To add country charm to your kitchen, fill rustic terra cotta plant pots with Italian herbs, such as lavender and basil. The herbs will come in handy when preparing meals.

Retro Decor

Vintage textiles and decor add a stylish retro flair to your kitchen design. Use an antique Formica dinette set instead of a formal dining table, and top it with a retro tablecloth featuring embroidered apples, cherries and other sweet designs. A red-and-white-checked tablecloth also will add to the vintage look.

Hang '40s- and '50s-inspired aprons for a decorative look and buy replicas of vintage kitchen appliances, such as blenders and toasters. If you have extra kitchen space, buy a jukebox to entertain guests during dinner parties.

Use a retro tea set as a table centerpiece and use vintage items, such as a wooden tool box, to store and display silverware.

Eco-friendly Design

Make your kitchen a healthy space by using earth-friendly textiles and decor items. Use recycled tile flooring and paint your walls with zero-VOC paints to reduce toxins.

To provide comfort while doing dishes or cooking, place soft, colorful jute rugs, which are biodegradable and recyclable, on the floor. Use 100 percent organic cotton dish towels.

Replace your outdated sink faucet with a water-saving version.
