Even if an iPod has 64 gigabytes of storage space, the popular portable music player cannot provide you with hours of listening entertainment unless you load it up with MP3s. Various programs are available that can help you do just that. While some are freeware programs, which you can download free of charge, others are traditional software programs that you have to pay for.
iTunes
Apples iTunes is one of the most popular programs for transferring MP3 songs to iPods and comes standard on all Apple computers. The freeware is also available to PC users running Windows operating systems. According to CBS' computer resource and consumer guide, CNet, Apple's latest incarnation of the program, iTunes 10, has moved well beyond its "humble" beginning as a jukebox music-playing program that could rip and burn CDs. Today's iTunes provides users with a variety of features, including an HD-movie rental library, a music store with a huge MP3 collection and a social networking tool known as Ping. Ping allows you to interact with your Facebook account so you can tag certain songs and artists that you like on iTunes.
MediaMonkey
MediaMonkey Gold, Version 3, is a music management program that can sync with iPods and a variety of other MP3 players. While there is also a stripped-down, freeware version of MediaMonkey available, which can provide you with the basic function of connecting and loading an iPod, it lacks many of the newer features of the complete MediaMonkey suite. These include a preview feature for making small snippets of your favorite songs and an automatic system that searches for, tags and coverts music files on your computer. But the freeware version still retains many of the essential elements that have earned MediaMonkey popularity, including its Party Mode and Auto DJ settings, which make it easy to play continuously when you are entertaining. The freeware version also saves you approximately $20, as of 2010.
WinAmp
WinAmp 5.57 is one of the leaders among music management programs when it comes to portable device compatibility. According to Top Ten Reviews, in addition to supporting original iPods, WinAmp works with iPod Shuffles, Classics and Nanos; P4S-compatible devices, like Microsoft's Zune; and USB flash music players and standard thumb drives. The program, which costs approximately $20 as of 2010, includes a customizable media library, a built-in lyric-finding system, a podcast library and an online radio system. In addition, WinAmp's interface is customizable, which means you can outfit its operation screen with skins, or coverings, of varying colors and designs. You can download thousands of these skins as plug-ins.
