Transfer Xp From The Dell To A Different Computer

Windows XP is one of the older operating systems from Windows, but it was a very popular operating system that many people still find usable and sometimes preferable. If you have a copy of XP on your Dell computer, you may be able to use it on another computer of your choice, although you don't transfer the operating system so much as you transfer the license.

Instructions

1. Determine if you can use your copy of XP on another computer. If your copy of XP came with your Dell, it is probably only licensed to run on that Dell computer. You can check your manual or call Dell to find out more details. If you installed a full version of XP on your Dell, you can transfer your license to another computer.

2. Back up all of your files from your Dell computer. Copy all of your data files to a CD, flash drive or some other type of media. Make sure you have copies of the programs on your Dell so that they can be reinstalled.

3. Format your hard drive. You can not uninstall an operating system. The operating system is licensed for only one computer at a time, so you must remove it from the Dell computer. Insert the Windows XP CD in the drive and restart the computer. Boot from the CD. Follow the instructions to install Windows XP on the Dell, but when after it asks for the location, choose your hard drive and then choose the "Format" option. Shut down the computer when the formatting is complete.

4. Turn on the computer to which you wish to transfer XP. Insert the Windows XP CD. Restart the computer and let it boot from the CD, or press the key to enter the BIOS and change the startup to boot first from the CD. After Windows XP starts, accept the license agreement and choose to install XP on the hard drive. Enter the Windows key and let the CD install Windows XP on your computer.
