Decorate Within The 50s Style

When decorating with a 50s-style flair, use vintage and antique pieces for an authentic look. Interior designers of the 1950s embraced bright hues, over-the-top wall decor, shiny embellishments, sleek chrome details and modern acrylic furnishings. Get creative with colors, patterns and materials to turn any room of your home into a vibrant retro-inspired space.

Instructions

1. Decorate your living room, den or bedroom with 50s-style tripod lamp, which features three legs and rests on a table. Choose a lamp with shiny silver legs and a brightly hued shade for an authentic look. Place standing lamps, which were also found in many 50s homes, by your favorite reading chairs.

2. Decorate any room in your home with 50s-inspired wall hangings. Display a silver sunburst clock for a true retro look. Hang kitschy 50s-style plaster wall decor in peacock or other bird designs; look for vintage pieces with rhinestone or gem embellishments.

3. Enhance your living room with white acrylic furniture for a modern 50s look. Buy a white plastic egg-shaped chair, which can hang from the ceiling via a chain or rest on a stand. Acrylic tulip chairs, which were also popular in the 50s, feature swivel bases. Cover the chairs with vibrant 50s-inspired decor colors, such as yellow, red or turquoise.

4. Give your kitchen an authentic diner look by buying a formica-topped chrome dinette set. Choose a set with bright red plastic-covered chairs. Decorate the table with shiny chrome napkin holders and plastic squeeze condiment bottles for a whimsical look. Hang light-up neon signs and buy a jukebox filled with 50s songs to finish the design.

5. Infuse your bedroom with sweet 50s-style charm. Cover your bed with a handmade quilt featuring delicate floral embroidery details. Hang vintage lace curtains for a romantic look. Display an antique crystal vase filled with sweetheart roses.
