Theme Suggestions For Kid & Adult Game Rooms

Open space in your home can become a game room adults and kids will enjoy.

Themed game rooms can be a fun addition to any home and are usually good spaces for entertaining guests. To be sure that a game room is appropriate for and will be appreciated by both children and adults, discuss various theme ideas with the whole family or plan a surprise design project.

Casino

Cover tables with green felt to enhance a casino theme.

A casino theme might be fitting for a game room in your home, especially if you and your friends enjoy card games, such as poker. The My Space Designers website claims that "Poker in particular has seen a surge in popularity, so game room furniture that accommodates card games is perfect." Line round wooden tables with green felt or purchase poker tables with wells for poker chips. To make the room comfortable for children, stack an assortment of board games and children's card games on a bookshelf and decorate part of the room with a television and leather couch where children and adults can lounge. Instead of traditional throw pillows, purchase a few large, stuffed dice to prop on the couches to enhance the gambling theme.

Modern-Retro

A jukebox would be a nice addition to a modern-retro game room.

The My Space Designers website lists a modern-retro theme inspired by mid-20th century design elements as a popular theme for family game rooms. Shiny jukeboxes, vinyl booths like those found in diners and stools with chrome accents are appropriate furniture pieces for a modern-retro game room. According the My Space Designers website, "Retro rooms also feature fun color palettes of aqua, red, blue, or pink, along with contrasting patterns like black and white linoleum flooring. For a truly vintage feel, a retro game room makeover can include Coca-Cola bottle machines paired with pinball games, retro memorabilia or advertising from the era." Lunch boxes and posters from popular TV shows and movies of the era also would fit this theme.

Family Sports Bar

Dark leather furniture can help give a game room a sports-bar feel.

Game rooms with a sports bar theme are typically thought of as male-only territory, but they can be fun for women and children, too, if decorated correctly. Instead of bar stools, choose comfortable black or brown leather couches. Drape large stuffed-animal versions of team mascots across the armrests. Kids will delight in this suggestion from the Susan Berry Design website: "Enhance the sporting theme with push-the-envelope accents. Create hanging lights by drilling holes in the tops of team football helmets and adding a standard light kit, available at home-improvement stores." Install a big-screen television for watching games or for keeping the kids entertained while the adults shoot pool or play poker.
