Where Did The Title Golf Originate

Golf began to be played in the 15th century in Scotland, in the kingdom of Fife. Players were known to hit a rock or pebble around terrain that involved sand dunes, hills and natural obstacles using a stick. Similar games were being played in Belgium and Holland at the time.


Origin of the Word Golf


According to Scottishgolfhistory.net, the first time the word was written was in 1457. King James II banned "ye golf" in an attempt to get more people to practice archery.


Gentlemen Only Ladies Forbidden


Golf does not stand for Gentlemen Only Ladies Forbidden. That is a common, misconceived notion that many golf historians has disproved.


Spellings


According to evidence found in Scotland, the word golf was spelled many ways early on. Spelling included: goff, gowf, golf, goif, gof, gowfe, gouff and golve. According to Scottishgolfhistory.net, gowfe was the most prevalent way to spell the word.


Chole and Kolf


Historians believe the terms chole and kolf meant club. Another variation of the word was found in Germany in the word 'kolbe," which means club.


Other Golf Words


The word birdie is derived from the term "bird." During the 1800s, the term "bird" was used in the United States to describe greatness or excellence. The term "bogey" came from a song in the 19th century called "The Bogey Man."
