Whether you are a big fan of 1950s music, dress and culture or not, you can have a lot of fun with a '50s party. You can get so many different kinds of outfits and decorations without spending much money. Also, the music always gets a crowd dancing and enjoying the free spirit that epitomized the 20th century decade when rock and roll made its debut.
Instructions
1. Get a satellite radio hookup of your own or borrow a friends for the evening. Both XM and Sirius have a station that only plays 1950s music. They play it with little interruption and even replay disc jockey shows from the era. This music option can be easier than trying to find records or CDs, unless you already have a large collection.
2. Set up a soda fountain style area to serve food. Hot dogs, hamburgers and French fries were very cool in the 50s, as many people were just discovering the fast-food craze. Put out ice cream and soda for guests to make floats or designate a "soda jerk" to make them on request.
3. Send invitations with request for guests to dress in their favorite 1950s styles. Include a few suggestions for the uncreative guests on your list. Clothing item like bobby socks, poodle skirts, leather jackets and duck tails always made the scene.
4. Rent a working jukebox for a really authentic setting. Other rental items that will dress up the atmosphere include chrome tables, chairs with vinyl seats and 1957 Chevy parked outside. Add a few life-size cutouts of Elvis, Marilyn Monroe and James Dean and you'll be the cat's meow among your friends.
