50's Cake Decorating Ideas
When reminiscing about the 1950s, the images that often come to mind are the many musical numbers of "Grease," the Fonz and his motorcycle on "Happy Days," and the innocent and spirited fun of sock hops and pep rallies. Many of these ideas, if simplified, can be translated to cake form that serves as a pleasant memento of the '50s era. Add this to my Recipe Box.
'Grease'
One of the highlights of the "Grease" movie is the car racing that was a huge event for the teens of that generation. For the cake, draw or use an imprint of a classic '50s hot rod car. If your car knowledge is waning, examples of cars to use can be found by watching the film or by researching popular 1950s cars on the Internet. Many of the cars of the day were embellished with stripes or flames, which should be reflected on the cake. The cars were often brightly colored so don't be afraid to use bright shades like red, blue or yellow when decorating the cake.
'Happy Days'
A classic image associated with this show and likewise, era, is the Fonz perched atop his motorcycle. Translate this image onto a cake using icing and chocolate for his signature leather jacket and duck tail hairstyle. If you prefer a professional touch, many specialty cake makers are equipped with a special printer that uses food coloring instead of ink to print edible images. Bring in the "Happy Days" or Fonzy photo and they can scan the image and print it on the cake.
Sock Hops and Pep Rallies
Poodle skirts and varsity sweaters are popular images for the 1950s and can be easily duplicated into edible form. On the cake, use a colored outline to draw and color in a long, frilly skirt. On the skirt draw a poodle. For a varsity-sweater cake, outline and color in the shape of a sweater with a large V in the center. For examples of images of the traditional attire of the era, research online or via old TV shows and films.
