Yellow roses traditionally symbolize the 50th wedding anniversary.
With the divorce rate in the United States near 40 percent as of 2010, a marriage of 50 years is well worth celebrating. The party you host for the happy couple should pay tribute to their years together as well their years ahead. Make this party one they'll always remember with decorations honoring their marriage.
Recount the Years in Photos
Spouses often say that they were destined to meet. Use this concept in your party decorations with photos of the couple throughout their lives, including the years before they met. Start from when the couples were children and collect a photo of each spouse at various points throughout the years. If the spouses aren't very close in age, consider starting from a set point in time (rather than a set point in their lives) so that you have the same number of photos for each spouse before they met. Find photos of the couple on their first date, at the time of their engagement and at their wedding. The sheer number of photos you're likely to find will emphasize the length of the 50 years the couple has been married. Get balloons, napkins and tablecloths printed with photos of the pair, and hang a large print of them together as a banner at the celebration.
50 Year Bouquet Centerpiece
For a more classic and understated party theme, place bouquets of violets or yellow roses as the centerpiece at each table. These flowers are traditional gifts for a couple celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary. Fill a vase with a mixed arrangement of 25 violets and 25 yellow roses to symbolize the way the husband and wife compliment each other. Or, fill the vase with 50 of either flower to symbolize the years of their marriage. Avoid this idea if either of the guests of honor has allergies.
Recreate the First Date
Since the couple likely went on their first date during the diner era, you can take them back in time by decorating the party venue like a 1950s diner. Rent a jukebox to play songs from the time, including the couple's old favorites. Seat guests at booths complete with vintage pictures and records on the nearby walls. Include soda ads and autographed photos of celebrities. Be sure not to stray outside of the time period by hanging pictures of bands that didn't form until the 1960s or products that didn't exist, for example.
