Adornments & Suggestions For A Retro Wedding

A retro-theme wedding and wedding reception are great opportunities for a couple to celebrate their wedding by recalling a past time and place. Retro weddings and receptions can celebrate a favorite decade or era with colors, decorations, food and clothing that match the decades of the 1940s through the 1980s.

Retro Hollywood

There are several themes that a film loving couple can use to decorate their wedding and their reception. One theme could be Old Hollywood. Capture the spirit of Tinseltown with a retro wedding that celebrates the decades of the 1930s through the 1950s. Use costumes from old movies and musicals and decorate the reception room with movie posters.

The retro Hollywood theme can be used for almost any decade of movies. Fans of 1980s movies can use posters of films such as "Dirty Dancing" and "The Breakfast Club" as decorations. Play music by Cindy Lauper and Madonna to to create a fun reception atmosphere.

Retro Receptions

Incorporate retro themes in the music, food and decorations of a retro reception. For a 1950s-themed wedding, use paper cutouts of a jukebox and records to decorate the walls where the reception is being held. Instead of the title of the song, print the name of the happy couple as the musicians on the record.

Decorate with beads, tie-dye prints and flowers for a 1960s wedding.

Have the wedding DJ play music that matches whatever time period the retro wedding is themed after.

Wedding food for a retro wedding can be a blast from the past. Diner food such as hamburgers, french fries and milkshakes can complete a retro feel for a reception.

Wedding Dresses and Suits

After the theme and time period are chosen for a retro wedding, choose outfits and dresses that match the theme and time. The dresses and suits can be worn during the wedding, or the reception if the couple wears traditional wedding outfits during the ceremony.

For a sixties wedding, brides can wear pink dresses and pill box hats for a glamorous Jackie Kennedy-inspired look. Brides and bridesmaids could wear go-go boots, tie-dye dresses and flower headbands for a Woodstock look. To match that look, the groom and groomsmen could wear bell bottom pants and fringed vests.

Retro Wedding Colors

After the couple has chosen a time period for a retro theme, they can use that theme to choose colors and decorate their wedding invitations. Pink and black are colors that match a 1950s theme and can be reflected in poodle skirts worn at the reception by the bride or bridesmaids.

Pink, orange, purple, green, blue, red and yellow are colors that can be used in tie-dye to decorate a 1960s or 1970s theme.

Gold and silver are colors that can be used for an Old Hollywood theme reflecting the 1930s and 1940s.

Hot pink and other fluorescent colors can be used for a 1980s theme.
