Decorate In Retro Style

Retro style

Decorating with a retro style makes for a funky yet classic atmosphere. Retro decor typically means 1950s decor. There are specific style and color palettes associated with retro design. Decor from the '50s often utilizes colors such as forest green, salmon pink, powder blue, cherry red and turquoise. Chrome is a popular choice for hardware in '50s-style decor.

Instructions

1. Paint your living room powder blue or salmon pink. Use cherry red or turquoise in the kitchen. You may also want to use wallpaper in a retro design. Paint your trim or molding and any window sills a complementary color. White is a good option for trim because it complements all colors.

2. If you want to have new flooring installed, a retro option is black-and-white checked tile. Have the tile installer alternate the white tiles with black tiles to create a checkerboard look. Another option would be wood flooring. If your house does not have wood floors, or they are badly damaged, use Pergo flooring, which is available through a local flooring company.

3. Choose furniture from the '50s to furnish your room or rooms. Many furniture stores carry furniture that looks like the real thing. If you want genuine '50s items, scour your local flea markets and antique shops.

4. If your project room is the kitchen, choose appliances from the '50s if you can find them at antique shops. If you can't find one or more items that you need, search for them online using eBay. Many manufacturers also have retro lines that fit your design and stand up to the energy standards we have today.

5. Accessorize your space with retro style items that are useful in your particular room. Use retro clocks, kitchenware, rugs, pots and pans in the kitchen. Use throw pillows in colors that complement your sofa or other furniture, throw rugs or even an antique television in the living room.
