Develop A Trip Computer

You can turn your mobile phone into a trip computer.

A trip computer is an on-board device on vehicles that allows you to keep track of the places that you have visited, as well as the number of miles that you have traveled. Purchasing a trip computer can cost you approximately $75 to $100, as of 2011. However, if you have a cell phone with Internet access you can build your own trip computer.

Instructions

1. Get a cell phone that is Internet capable. If you don't already have one you can purchase from a local cell phone service provide for around $100, as of 2011.

2. Register for a data plan. Using the GPS function on a phone can incur a lot of bandwidth charges. If you use it often you can end up with a hefty phone bill. You can prevent this by signing up with an unlimited data plan for about $30 per month. Call your service provider's customer service department to sign up.

3. Choose a cell phone GPS software. This will turn your cell phone into a trip computer by giving you your current location, showing where you have been, and creating a geo-fence to let you know when you have crossed into a specific area. You can also share your location and trip history with your friends online, keep track of the number of miles that you have traveled and find out how many miles you have to cover to arrive at your destination. A few programs that you can use include Google Maps for Mobile, BuddyWay, or AmazeGPS. As of 2011, all of these are free to use.

4. Sign up for the software that you have chosen. Create a user name, provide a cell phone number, an e-mail address, and click "Register." You will receive an e-mail and a text message confirming your registration in a few minutes.

5. Open the e-mail or the text message using your cell phone. Open your mobile phone's web browser. A URL will appear in the message. Click on the URL and this will take you to a download page. Download and install the application to your phone and once you have finished restart your phone.

6. Go to the"Applications" menu on your phone. Open up the GPS software that you have installed. A map will appear with your current location on it denoted as a red or blue dot. When you move, the dot will move along the map. This allows you to navigate. As long as the application is switched on, your movement will be recorded by the software.

7. Track the phone by going to the website where you registered. Log on to the site and you will see the same map as you see on your phone. If you click on the "History" or "Trips" tab you can see a record of your movements.
