Homemade '50s Party Centerpieces
The 1950s invokes a sense of nostalgia even for those who were not alive during this era. Icons such as James Dean, Elvis and the Fonz, along with films like "Grease," help people of all ages to relate to this theme, which lends itself to a party. Centerpieces should tie into the '50s theme. Use any items from this decade you or a relative may have stored away, or visit a vintage or party store to collect items for centerpieces.
Records
Vinyl records are closely associated with this time period and are an ideal shape and size to construct centerpieces. Choose a record from a popular artist of the '50s, such as Elvis, Johnny Cash, Carl Perkins or Frank Sinatra. Place a record on a turntable. Carefully place some treats on the record like wrapped candy--nothing that could spill or melt and damage the record. Set the turntable turning slowly and let guests enjoy the look of the rotating centerpiece. For a simpler effect--or if you don't have access to a turntable or electricity--replace the plates on a tiered serving platter with records. Ensure they are settled securely and place treats or party favors on the records.
Instruments
Capitalize on the age of rock and roll by using popular instruments of the 1950s. Collect an assortment of inflatable, plastic instruments such as an electric guitar, keyboard or saxophone. Place one in the center of each table or create one large focal point by arranging all the instruments on one table. Choose a large table, like the banquet or serving table, for this arrangement. Accent the instruments by scattering glitter or confetti on the tables around them. Hangouts in the 1950s typically had a jukebox. Bake a sheet cake and round off the top corners. Using frosting, decorate the cake with the details of a jukebox. This centerpiece will appeal to guests visually and when it's time for dessert.
Poodle Skirt
Set up several flower arrangements, preferably in tall vases that have a wider bottom. Cut strips of colorful fabric that will fit around each vase as a skirt. Add decorations, such as trim on the hem. Use cotton balls and some fabric paint to add poodle details. Sew the waist and seam of the skirt shut (or use glue) and attach it to the vase so it fans out onto the table.
