Option To Itunes

The iPod, Apple's popular MP3 player, is set up to work with the iTunes software. iTunes works to load up the iPod with music, serve as a music player on your computer, and allow for playlists and burning capabilities. But, iTunes is not your only option. There are various free downloadable programs that are compatible with iPods. They can be great alternatives to iTunes as a digital jukebox.

Media Monkey

According to Donald Bell, senior editor for MP3 players for CNET Reviews, Media Monkey is an ideal alternative to iTunes if you have a big, unorganized collection of music. It allows you to tag your files -- there is auto tagging and advanced tagging features. It plays MP3s as well as other audio formats. You can convert files such as M4A, OGG and WMA files into other formats. Look up missing Album Art and create playlists. Media Monkey is compatible with iPhones, iPods and many other MP3 device. You can sync your tracks onto your device. The program is good for playing music, uploading CDs and burning music. Media Monkey only works in Windows.

Winamp

Winamp is great if you need a lot of features with your digital music player -- possibly something you're missing with iTunes. Winamp has lots of Internet radio channels to use, auto-tagging, tons of skins and plug-ins you can download for free. You can customize your media player, which is compatible with mp3s and other audio files. It syncs with iPods and allows you to subscribe to podcasts. It can be overwhelming if you don't like all the customization, and there is no Mac version, but it rivals iTunes in a number of ways.

Songbird

Unlike many of its competitors, Songbird is compatible with both Macs and PCs. It has a clean interface and has lots of integrated web services. You can buy MP3s from its 7digital Music Store, find concert listings, listen to streaming radio, and share your friends' music libraries. It doesn't, however, support all iPod versions -- no iPhone, iPod Touch or the 4G nano.
