In many cases, when you watch videos which you've saved on your hard drive in Windows Media Player, the software program will save them to your library. This library can become very large over time. Also, the library can become corrupted so that it doesn't reflect the videos that are currently on your computer. If you wish to remove these videos, you can do so from within Windows Media Player. If the tools in Media Player don't work, there are other steps you can take to delete the video library.
Instructions
1. Open Windows Media Player. Select the "Library" tab. Choose "Video" from the drop-down menu.
2. Select the video you'd like to remove from Windows Media Player. To choose multiple files for removal, click and drag your mouse to enclose them. Alternatively, you can shift-click after the last video file you want to remove or ctrl-click on each file to be removed.
3. Right-click on one of the files and choose "Delete" from the menu. Choose "Delete from library only" to remove the videos from Windows Media Player without deleting them from your computer. Choose "Delete from library and my computer" to remove the videos both from the library and delete them from the your computer at the same time.
4. Right-click on the bar at the top of Windows Media Player. Select "Tools" from the list. Select "Options." Select the "Privacy" tab and choose "Clear History." This will remove all recently played files, including the videos, from the list.
5. Click the "Clear Caches" button, which is directly beneath the "Clear History" button. This will remove the list of recently played CDs and DVDs from the list.
6. Select the "Devices" tab. Click the "Advanced" button. Choose "Delete Files" to delete the video files that have been saved in the temporary cache folder. Click "OK."
7. Open My Computer (Computer in Windows Vista). Click "Tools > Folder Options." Select the "View" tab. Check the box beside "Show hidden files and folders." Use Windows Search to search for the file which contains the text "wmplibrary" as part of the file name if these measures fail to remove the videos from your library. Under "More Advanced Options" select "Search in hidden files and folders." Click "Search." When the file appears in the results window, delete it. The will reset your library so that you can start building it again from scratch.
