New updates for the iPhone firmware usually add new features and fix old issues with your iPhone. However, some updates can actually slow down your phone and make it more cumbersome to use. If this is the case for you, it is possible to roll back to a previous update if you preferred the way your phone worked when it had that version of the firmware.
Instructions
1. Download the old firmware version that you preferred from one of the many websites that offer the firmware free. Some of these are iClarified, iPhoneawareness and Felixbruns (see Resources).
2. Plug your iPhone into your computer with the USB cable you got when you bought the device and then click "Start" > "All Programs" > "iTunes" > "iTunes" if iTunes doesn't open automatically when you plug in your phone.
3. Press the "Home" button and the "On/Off" switch on your iPhone at the same time for 10 seconds, release the "On/Off" switch only and continue to hold the "Home" button for seven seconds until iTunes informs you that your device is in recovery mode, then release.
4. Right-click "Restore," then select the iPhone firmware version you downloaded from the Internet and click "Restore." iTunes will back up and restore your iPhone with the older version of the firmware.
