Girl changing records
Sock hops are a blast to plan and for the guests who attend. The 1950's was a time of sodapop, roller skates, rock and roll, and poodle skirts. According to party-games-etc.com, "The 50's was a time when kids started a culture of their own by thinking out of the box." Hosting a party based on this specific era allows you to highlight the elements you enjoy and wax nostalgic.
Party Favors
Sunglasses
Instead of using traditional napkin rings use sunglasses. You can place a napkin in between the folds of the sunglasses. The guests can then keep the sunglasses and use them as an accessory to their costumes. The guests can then keep the sunglasses and use them as an accessory to their costumes. Pom poms, pastel pearls and glow bracelets also make great party favors.
Meal
Comfort food
A fitting entrée to serve your guests would be cheeseburgers, fries and coca cola or root beer. Malts and shakes are a good idea for dessert.
Costumes
Girl from 1950's
Jeans and a button up shirt for the guys is a typical attire combination for this era. If the boys want a rougher look, they can wear black pants, a sleeveless shirt, leather jacket and hair slicked back. The girls could wear jeans and a button up shirt, or poodle skirts, sweater, knee high socks and saddle shoes.
Decorations
Juke box
Decorate with inflatable instruments, and posters or photos of famous actors and singers from the era.. Red and white gingham checked table cloths are also fitting decorations. Make a balloon arch with white and pink balloons to place at the entryway of the party and hang old 45 records on the ceiling. According to reasontoparty.com, no sock hop is complete without a juke box. You can make your own fake juke box and place a cd player inside, or purchase a real one at an antique store.
Games
Dance contests are a fun way to show off your 1950 style dance moves and impress the other party members. If you aren't so great at the dancing, then just have fun with it and go crazy, the other guests will laugh at the humor and maybe vote for you because of that. For those who know their 1950's music, a "guess that tune" game could be lots of fun. To be fair to those who don't, play with teams instead of individual competition. Another fun trivia game is to try and guess the price difference to products then and products now.
Music
Guitar
1950's and 1960's tunes are a must. Here is a list of popular songs from that era: Johnny B. Goode by Chuck Berry, Yakety Yak by the Coasters, anything by the Everly Brothers, anything by Elvis Presley, Love Potion Number 9. By the Clovers, Blue Suede Shoes by Carl Perkins, the Grease Soundtrack, Rock around the Clock by Bill Haley and his Comets, At the Hop by Danny and the Juniors, Rockin Robin by Bobby Day, anything by the Supremes, and anything by The Temptations. You can get a DJ, use a juke box, use a radio or get a live band.
