A WAV file, sometimes written as "Wave file," is a Microsoft and IBM standard format for storing audio on PCs. WAV files are standard audio files used on PCs for uncompressed audio. MP3 is a patented audio file that uses a lossy compression that makes MP3 files smaller than WAV files. For this reason, there are times it may be necessary to convert WAV files to the MP3 format. With an audio program capable of making this conversion, the process is simple and quick.
Instructions
1. Download the software you want to use to make the conversion from WAV to MP3. If you have an expensive audio program such as Roxio or Nero, you can accomplish this conversion without additional software. If you don't have audio software capable of conversion, there are a couple of low-cost and free options available (see resources). Either of these three alternative options work in similar fashion.
2. Open your audio conversion software and go to the "File" menus to add the WAV file you would like to convert. Typically, audio conversion software will allow you to batch convert, which means you can open several WAV files at once. Click the file you want to convert so it loads in your conversion software. To select several files, hold the CTRL key on your computer and click on the files you would like to batch convert.
3. Set the sound-quality and compression levels you want used in the conversion process. The higher quality you convert to, the bigger your MP3 file will be.
4. Select the output folder by browsing to the folder on your computer where you want to save the converted MP3. Press the "Convert" icon on the toolbar or go to the "Convert" menu to convert your file. The same file name will be used, but since the format is different, your original WAV file is preserved.
