Word book cards offer a unique layered look, with each letter staggered a little further out, so that you can read the entire word. A Cricut personal cutter allows you to cut fonts and other designs out of paper, plastic and chipboard without a computer. A variety of Cricut cartridges provide versatility for all types of home decor and paper crafting projects, including cards. Design a card with any word you like, including a name, for a personalized touch. Follow several basic steps to create your own word book card.
Instructions
1. Select a font. Most fonts work well; three of the best fonts to use include George, Plantin Schoolbook or Micky.
2. Open a layer for each letter of your word in the Cricut Design Studio and name the layer as desired. Remember that the longer your word is, the thicker the card will be. Shorter words of three to five letters work best for cards, like "joy," "love" or "faith."
3. Set your desired card height, which will apply to each layer/page. Make the card slightly smaller in height than the envelope you will use.
4. Add the letter designated in the first layer. Place it approximately two inches from the left side of the mat. Use the built-in gridlines to align the letters.
5. Click "preview" on the next layer so you can see the last letter. Turn on "Keep Preview as Background" in the "View" box so you can see each layer and make sure the letters are properly lined up.
6. Place the next letter just to the right of the preceding letter, but slightly overlapping.
7. Repeat the two previous steps until you have placed each letter on the page. Make sure the letter stays within the 11-inch boundary so it fits on the card stock properly during printing.
8. Adjust the letters so that spacing is correct, with the letters an even distance apart.
9. Go back to the first layer and enter CTRL-L to turn off the background preview. Add a rectangle or square just to the left of the letter to form the card body. Overlap the letter partially. Use the gridlines as needed. Highlight the rectangle, then copy and paste it to the next layer by hitting CTRL-C. This ensures that each letter "page" of the card is the same height. Repeat for each layer.
10. Meld or enmesh the rectangle on each layer. Check to ensure that the cutout is displayed after you select "view."
11. Check each layer to make sure your work looks the way you want it to.
12. Cut each letter/page in coordinating paper.
13. Cut a back side to the card if you like. Eliminate this step if you use double-sided paper.
14. Staple, stitch or punch holes and tie ribbon along the edge of your card to adhere it together, so you can flip open and close the pages.
15. Decorate the card as desired.
