Accentuate your black and white floor with complementary home decor.
Decorate your home to accentuate and complement the black and white floor tiles. Black and white checkered floor tiles can work for a retro theme, reminiscent of the popular diners in the 1950s, or an ultra-modern theme. Either way, decorate the room to work with the floor rather than compete with it. Choosing furniture and accessories that flow with the floor will result in a room that looks and feels complete.
Instructions
1. Paint the walls in a neutral shade, such as white. Add a border if you want more on the walls, or accentuate the walls in a different way.
2. Place furniture in the room that creates the style and mood you want, as well as functions within the room. A retro-style dining room could include a chrome dinette set with a red Formica top and red vinyl cushions on the dining chairs and stools. A modern living or family room could include a white leather sofa set with sleek, black occasional tables. Another alternative would be a bright sofa--such as lime green or red--to stand out amongst the black and white tiles.
3. Hang mirrors, pictures or other objects on the walls to add color and draw the room together. Introduce color to the walls for a modern room by using bright picture frames, or a black and white picture with a single red item, such as fingernails or a rose. Hang neon signs, neon clocks or black and white photos of cities or celebrities from the1950s for a retro theme.
4. Complete the room through the use of accessories. Use colorful accessories, such as pillows, vases or candles, if you want to add color to an otherwise black and white room. Vintage rooms could include a real jukebox, record players or vintage rotary telephones. Modern rooms might include statues, slick vases or contemporary lamps.
