Ensure adequate lighting is hung above a pool table.
The home recreation room is becoming a popular addition to many family homes. Providing a central area for entertainment and recreation, a recreation room should be comfortable and inviting. Since a recreation room is, by nature, a fun and relaxed area, it is the perfect opportunity to forgo styled decor and let your imagination run wild.
Personal Theater
Create a personal theater. Include a large screen television and plush chairs for ultimate comfort. An authentic antique popcorn popper can be placed in the corner for impromptu snacks. Alternatively, a small microwave will do the trick. Line the walls with large posters from your favorite movies for a dramatic touch. Choose drive-in movie theater speakers (authentic or replica) for additional wall decor.
Board Game Deluxe
Model the recreation room after a favorite board game. Many board games are brightly colored and have dramatic themes. Paint the walls or floor in the same pattern as the game board. Choose accent colors for the chairs and rugs from the colors of the game. Select a low-slung, sleek sofa and coordinating chairs to evoke the feeling of typical board game pieces. Place board games, decorative box lids, game pieces and currency in shadow boxes to hang on the walls.
Arcade Style
Make your recreation room a blast from the past and install old-fashioned arcade games around the room. Add a pool table and an air hockey table for extra effect. Place old car seats from the salvage yard around the room for lots of inexpensive seating. Use gaming implements for wall decor---pool sticks and hockey pucks, as well as stark clocks and advertising signs. Ensure that there is plenty of light above the pool table---5 inches of light per foot of table is recommended---but keep the rest of the lighting relatively dim. Add a jukebox in the comer for the finishing touch to a 1960s-style recreation room.
