Decorating Ideas
for a '50s Party
Throw a retro good time with '50s party theme that treats your guests to a glimpse of mid-century lifestyle. Invite attendees to dress appropriately in '50s style clothing: full skirts or slim peddle pushers for the ladies, jeans paired with white T-shirts, or button-down plaids for men. Design invitations that specify the party's theme so your guests can plan accordingly.
Sock Hop
Set up your party space reminiscent of a '50s style sock hop. Pink and turquoise were hot colors back in the day; complement both accents with black and silver. Create a dance floor surrounded by round tables and chairs. Decorate the table tops with layered cloths in the color scheme. Create sock hop centerpieces for each table by standing 45 vinyl records on small record stands. Dangle 45s from the ceiling for additional decorations. No sock hop party theme would be complete without the classic mirror ball. Make one yourself by gluing bits of broken CDs or mosaic mirror tiles onto a foam ball.
Diner Deluxe
Set up the party room to resemble a '50s diner with café tables, checkered or red vinyl tablecloths, chrome accents and early rock-n-roll music blaring from a jukebox. A jukebox cutouts will work if the real thing is not an option. Purchase a '50s diner wall decal to increase the authentic feel. Frame photos of vintage cars, hang vinyl records, set up a soda fountain and prepare party food on a griddle, diner-style. Serve milkshakes in fountain glasses, purchase black and white checkered napkins and plates to pay tribute to an old diner floor.
Drag Race Party
Turn an outdoor space into a '50s drag race event. Hang cardboard cutouts or vinyl decals of old cars around the perimeter of the outdoor area. Set up lights to resemble decal car headlights, and place picnic tables along the sidelines of the imaginary drag strip. Purchase a '50s style convertible photo prop for guests to take pictures behind or next to it.
Drive-In Party
Transform your backyard into a '50s drive-in theater, complete with a snack shack and a play area. Hang a sheet on the back of your house and project an old James Dean or Jimmy Stewart movie as background ambiance. Arrange the seating in pairs facing the movie screen, and use vintage car decals around the perimeter of the yard.
