Homecoming is a memorable event for students.
Homecoming events in high school and college create memories that last a lifetime. These events, which often include a dance, are often mile markers in the lives of students. Themes and decorations determine the tone and dress of the homecoming events and dances and often identify the school or graduating class. Choose a theme and decorations that are low in cost, high in creativity and certain to be remembered by all.
Costumes
Themed homecoming dances must be advertised so students can dress accordingly. Choose a theme such as Shakespeare and have everyone come in costume fitting the characters in Shakespeare's books. Famous Couples in History is a theme that will allow a couple to coordinate outfits and think outside the box. Decorate your venue accordingly. If your theme is historical, plan to teach everyone an older dance step, decorate with Shakespeare quotes and theater props. If you choose a more general theme such as famous couples, decorate with photos of famous red carpet couples and create a romantic atmosphere.
Era Theme
Plan a theme set in a specific decade or era. Decorations for a '50s theme could include an old-fashioned jukebox and a bar for sodas and root beer floats. An '80s theme could focus on big-hair bands or movies of that decade. A Roaring '20s themed homecoming could center on the flappers and speakeasies of that era. Intermix music from your decade theme with current tunes to add to the atmosphere.
Entertainment
Everyone wants to be a star, and homecoming is no different. Plan your homecoming around a Hollywood or red carpet theme. Have each couple walk down a red carpet to have their pictures taken. Decorate with stars and Hollywood memorabilia. Each couple could come dressed as a specific famous couple. On a big screen, play movie clips or trailers of new releases. Around the dance floor, cut out stars with famous names to represent the stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
Location Theme
Choose a destination or location homecoming theme and decorate accordingly. If you choose somewhere tropical such as Hawaii, decorate your venue to resemble a luau or island paradise. Faux trees, flower leis, tropical punch and surfboards will create a beach theme. If you plan a European theme, use the Eiffel Tower, London Bridge and Italian Riviera as inspiration for your decorations. You can also plan a more general theme such as a night in the city or under the sea. Use lights, music and props such as Lady Liberty for a city theme and shells, fish and blue items to decorate for a sea theme.
