Retro Designing Ideas

Marilyn Monroe painting

Decorating your home with a retro style can look fresh and modern. Vintage items can add elegance and sophistication to your home, while creating a personal space. Hang black-and-white images of classic entertainment icons on your walls for instant glamour. Frame vintage movie posters for a playful look. Choose fabrics and textures that reflect specific decades and reupholster antique furniture to make it ready for everyday use. Replace kitchen appliances with retro-inspired versions for a classic look.

1940s Decor

Decorate your home with a 1940s-syle flair. Buy a vintage-inspired solid oak phonograph player that features a radio and CD player, and hang a 1940s Ericcson wall phone, complete with a rotary dial and Bakelite handle. Adorn draperies with swag valances, glass tassels and silk cording. Set out a bold, graphic "tripod clock," a style which became popular when it was manufactured by Vitra in 1947.

1950s Decor

Use authentic 1950s furniture and replicas to add retro pizzazz to your home. Replace your dining room table with a brightly colored Formica or chrome version. Buy 1950s-style appliances, such as a toaster or refrigerator. Hang a "sunburst" clock on the wall and purchase a corded "princess phone" in a pastel shade. Hang framed pictures of classic movie stars such as James Dean and Marilyn Monroe.

1960s Decor

Add modern design elements to your home using 1960s-inspired decor and furnishings. That era's decor featured bold, geometric shapes, slick modular elements and a minimalist design. Set out a brightly colored, square-patterned rug, and scour antique shops for a Platner coffee table, which featured a sleek modern base and a tempered glass top.

1970s Decor

Give your home a groovy 1970s style by outfitting your bedroom with a shag rug, a lava lamp and a bean bag chair. Choose an olive green, rust brown or bright orange bedspread, and paint the walls a matching shade.
