Suggestions For A 50's Bowling Birthday Celebration

Allow guests to make their own root beer floats at your '50s bowling party.

Take it back to the days of poodle skirts and bowling shirts with a 1950s-themed bowling party. A '50s bowling theme is suitable for adults and children. Many bowling alleys offer special birthday packages; use your own decorations to create a simple or elaborate look. With a few supplies and creative ideas, your guests will enjoy a blast-from-the-past bowling birthday party.

Invitations

Print large bowling pins on white cardstock. Write the party details on the bowling pins and mail them to your guests. Tell everyone to wear 1950s-themed clothing -- such as bowling shirts, leather jackets, tight-fitting jeans and poodle skirts. Another invitation idea is miniature bowling pins. Write the party details on kids' plastic bowling pins. Hand-deliver the bowling pin invitations to your guests.

Decorations

Decorate the party area with bowling tableware and decorations. Place red and white, checkered tablecloths on the tables. Use records and bowling pins as centerpieces, and for balloon bouquets. Other '50s decorations, including an inflatable jukebox and musical instruments, small plastic bowling balls, music notes and posters of artists from the '50s.

Food

If you are having the party at a bowling alley, order pizzas, burgers and fries for your party guests. Other ideas include root beer floats and milkshakes. If you are having the party at home, create a hot dog bar and an ice cream bar. Allow guests to make their own hot dogs with all the fixings and finish off the meal by making their own homemade ice cream floats.

Bowling Shirt Activity

For a '50s bowling party at home, get each guest a button-up black or white shirt. Give the guests iron-on patches, puff paint, fabric markers, glitter pens, extra fabric and ribbon. Tell the guests to make their own bowling shirt. Award prizes to the party guests with the best, funniest, silliest and craziest bowling shirts. Send these bowling shirts home as mementos of the party. Check with management first before doing this activity at a bowling alley.

Games

Award a prize to the party guest who has the best '50s attire. For a party at home, set up plastic bowling pins and have guests play a game. The player who knocks down the most pins in 10 frames wins the game and a prize. For a party at the bowling alley, award a prize to the party guest with the highest score each game. Also award prizes to the guest who bowls the highest score when asked to bowl in a silly way, such as backward between their legs, walking funny on the approach, granny shots and bowling blindfolded.
