Arcade games were once only available to be played by traveling to an arcade or another establishment with gaming machines, but many games that began as arcade fixtures can be played at home. Gamers can buy many different arcade games for their personal computers and play them by using their mouse and keyboard.
Pac-Man
Pac-Man is an arcade game that features a round, yellow protagonist who attempts to collect points and complete levels in a maze while avoiding ghost enemies. Many versions of Pac-Man have been made for personal computers, including Pac-Man: Adventures in Time that include modern updates to the original game. Pac-Man: Adventures in Time was first released in October 2000 and adheres closely to the original Pac-Man formula while offering better graphics that take advantage of 3D technology. Players can control Pac-Man's movements using the directional pad on their computer or laptop rather than using an arcade-style joystick.
Pinball
Pinball is another classic arcade game that is available in disc form for personal computers. Pinball has players use a pair of flippers to propel a small ball around obstacles. Striking different obstacles or hitting the ball into specific areas can earn different amounts of points. Players want to the ball "alive" by keeping it from falling past the two flippers. 3D Ultra Pinball: Thrillride was released in June 2000 and provides updates to the arcade version of pinball. Players can use their directional pads and other keyboard buttons to flip the path of the ball and simulate the action that would take place in a pinball game. 3D Ultra Pinball: Thrillride features an environment designed to look like an amusement park, a common theme in many pinball games simulated and otherwise.
Museum
In October 2005, Namco released Namco Museum 50th Anniversary, a game that combines multiple arcade games to give players a variety of options. Pac-Man is included, as is Ms. Pac-Man, an alternate version of the game featuring a female main character. Also included is Galaga, a game in which players try to shoot down opposing space ships. Rally-X is a maze game featured in Namco Museum, and two racing games, Pole Position and Pole Position 2, are also included. Bosconian, Sky Kid, Galaxian, Xevious, and Dragon Spirit are shooting games included in the package, and Dig Dug lets players fight underground monsters. Mappy is a side-scrolling adventure game included in Namco's collection and Rolling Thunder is an action game. Alternate versions of Pac-Man and Galaga called Pac-Mania and Galaga '88 can be unlocked by achieving high scores on other games in the collection.
