Use A Rockbox For Fuze

Take control of your media.

The Sansa Fuze is a versatile and cost-effective MP3 player. Installing a new interface like Rockbox, an open source jukebox firmware, will take it to the next level.

Instructions

Install Rockbox on your Sansa Fuze

1. Check the firmware version. It will not work with Firmware V2. To check this, go to your home screen, then "Settings," "System Settings," "Info" and "Version." If it says "V1," proceed with the installation instructions below. If it says "V2," stop. You can't install Rockbox.

2. Download Rockbox.zip and Fuzea.bin files. A link is provided in the Resources section from Cnet.com, but you can download from many others if you choose.

3. Once you have downloaded the files (preferably to your desktop), you will need to use a compression utility like WinZip or WinRAR to extract the files. Right-click on the zip file to extract to the location you specify. (Again, the desktop will work fine here as well.)

4. The Sansa Fuze needs to be set to MSC mode. From "Settings," go to "System settings," "USB mode," then "MSC." Auto Detect is the default if you wish to change it back when you are done.

5. Plug your Fuze into your USB port. Your normal pop-up should generate that asks what to do with this device. Choose "Open Files." Drag Fuzea.bin into the root directory of the Fuze folder. Put the ".rockbox" file there as well.

6. Disconnect your Fuze from the PC. You will get an upgrading firmware screen. Do not press any buttons until the operation is complete; this could damage your device.

7. Once it is complete, you will need to power it down and turn it back on. You will come to the Rockbox screen when the power is back up.

8. Plug the Fuze into the PC. Navigate to your Rockbox folder, and drop your add in ".wad files." You can download many different .wad files to be able to play games and various other media on your Fuze.

9. To restore your Fuze, just remove the two files, .rockbox and Fuzea.bin. This will return your Fuze to the original settings.
