Wurlitzer Tips

Wurlitzer electric pianos started in Ohio.

Franz Rudolph Wurlitzer founded the Wurlitzer company in 1853 in Cincinnati, Ohio and originally produced stringed instruments, woodwinds, theater organs and electronic organs. Wurlitzer marketed the electric piano, but they called it the electronic piano. It was an electromagnetic stringless piano. Today the term electric piano is used for a totally different kind of instrument but bears the name of Wurlitzer.

Tune Your Wurlitzer

You can tune your Wurlitzer Electric Piano without a soldering iron or file, all you need to do is move the reed forward or backward to change the pitch two to three semitones in either direction.A semitone is also called a half step or a half tone; it's the smallest musical interval used in Western tonal music.

Relieve Sticky Keys

To relieve sticky keys, a condition caused by moisture, pry apart the felt bushings underneath the bottom lip of the key and the center balance rail bushing in the center of the key. You can buy a key bushing tool to make the job easier, or just use a screwdriver.

Quiet Noisy Parts

Any loose or noisy part of your Wurlitzer electric piano can be quieted by the three screws located in the rear of your piano. These screws are for the dampers, the hammers and the whip assemblies, use a long thin flathead screwdriver to tighten them.

Periodic Loud Distortion

If you have periodic loud distortion with your electric piano, turn it off and lightly bang up and down on the keys to dislodge any dust that might be in the pickups. Also check the reeds, they could be just slightly touching the pick up on hard hits. Removing all the keys and vacuuming out the inside of the case will fix this problem.

Tie Up Your Wires

Before you install a new amp, clean all of your ground connections with Emory paper, especially the metal stand-offs that the amp will be sitting on. Emory paper is like sandpaper and is used for sanding down rough surfaces.
