Bar Work Responsibilities

Bar workers have a duty to watch out for drunken customers and keep the area clean.


Bar workers --- also called bartenders --- are mainly responsible for serving drinks at businesses such as restaurants, clubs and other establishments licensed to sell alcohol. The bar worker's duties center on attending to the needs of the customer, but he's also required to help provide a comfortable and clean environment at his place of employment. The bar worker will therefore assist with keeping the place tidy and ensuring that customers aren't breaking the law.


Create Drinks


Chief among the bar worker's duties is to serve drinks for customers when orders come in. Customers might queue at the bar, or in some cases the worker might bring drinks to customers at tables. Because many bars offer cocktails, the bar worker must know mix these specialty drinks in the correct manner, and, as with fulfilling any drink order, should be able to do so quickly without excess mess. Certain etiquette is required when serving drinks, too. For example, the bartender should know that Guinness is poured in a particular way.


Food


In some cases, the bar staff double as food service workers and may perform some of the duties typically carried out by other members of the workplace's team. The bar worker may be required to help prepare and serve food in the kitchen, as well as take food orders at the bar.


Customer Control


The bar staff have a duty to be vigilant when it comes to whom they serve. If necessary, bar workers should request identification from any individuals who appear under the age required to consume alcohol, and should ask customers who can't produce ID to leave. Bar workers should also watch out for customers who are inebriated and refuse to serve more alcohol if a customer has clearly drunk too much.


Cleanliness


The bar worker needs to keep her workplace looking clean and tidy. This may require removing any spills from the bar or tables, replacing beer mats and menus as necessary and keeping the bar free of clutter. At the end of the day, the bar staff will likely be required to wipe the bar clean.


Cash


Bar workers handle cash that's used to pay for drinks and food and manage the cash kept in the bar till. This involves acquiring more change when needed and calculating the bar's takings at the end of each day.
