If you are recording live audio and need it encoded to an MP3 format, you might think you need expensive, high-tech software for the file to export correctly. However, encoding MP3s from live audio is fairly easy. You can record any content you want for free using special freeware known as Audacity.
Instructions
1. Download Audacity and the Lame MP3 encoder from the official Audacity website. Once you have downloaded both components, double-click on the Audacity icon to run the Installation Wizard.
2. Connect a microphone to the computer, and place it in front of the live audio source you want to record.
3. Press the record button before the live audio starts, and make sure the audio levels are correct. The sound waves should never pass above or below the 1 or -1 margins. If it does, adjust the input volume slider (located at the top of the program) lower. If you do not see enough movement in the sound waves, then you will want to move the slider up.
4. Delete the test recording and press the record button again when the live audio you want to record begins. Once the audio has ended, press the stop button.
5. Go to the File menu and select the "Export to MP3" option. A window will pop up asking you to locate the LAME encoder.
6. Browse to find the LAME encoder. Once you have found it, press OK. Another window will open where you can enter information about the new audio recording. Once you have entered the information, press OK again. The file will now be encoded as an MP3. This process may take a few minutes, depending on the length of the recording.
