Convert MIDI files to MP3 with iTunes
With the myriad of digital music file formats available, it can be confusing and frustrating when you are trying to consolidate all of your music. MIDI files, which are audio files created from programmed software instruments, are often used in recording programs and by electronic musicians. If your music collection includes MIDI files, you may want to convert these files to a more standard format such as MP3 to make listening and transferring your music easier. Luckily, you can use Apple iTunes to easily convert your MIDI files to MP3.
Instructions
1. Turn on your computer and open iTunes. Go to the "Edit" or "iTunes" menu and select "Preferences." Click on the "General" tab and choose "Import Settings." Change the selection in the drop-down menu to "MP3 Encoder." Select your desired bitrate for MP3 files and click "OK". Typically, MP3s have a bitrate between 128 kbps and 256 kbps; the higher the bitrate, the better the audio quality.
2. Import the MIDI file you wish to convert to MP3 into iTunes. Drag the file into the iTunes library window and wait for iTunes to import and analyze the file. Right click the MIDI file and choose "Create MP3 Version" or "Convert Selection to MP3."
3. Wait for the MIDI file to convert to MP3. If your MIDI file is not protected, you do not have to worry about anything else, as you will now have both a MIDI version and an MP3 version of your audio file. Protected MIDI files must be added to an iTunes playlist and burned to a blank CD-R. Insert the blank CD-R into your computer and choose the playlist containing your MIDI file. Click the button for "Burn" and wait for the burning process to finish.
4. Navigate to your newly burned audio CD using the sidebar on the left-hand side of the main iTunes application window. Select the CD and import the audio file that you have just burned onto it. Now that the MP3 Encoder has been enabled in iTunes, the imported file will be in MP3 format.
5. Playback the newly created MP3 file in iTunes. Make sure that there are no errors in the file that may have been created during the conversion process. If the file conversion was successful, you can delete the MIDI version in the iTunes library.
