Decorate Modern Retro

This chair symbolizes mid-century in style and color.

The lounge chair and ottoman designed by Ray and Charles Eames for Herman Miller, the Tulip chair manufactured by Knoll Furniture and George Nelson's slatted wood platform bench are iconic symbols of Mid-Century Modern furniture design. Designed with clean lines and simple shapes, mid-century furniture is incorporated into many housing styles. With the addition of vintage accessories like an LP record player, jukebox and period movie posters, your home will become a timeless, modern showplace.

Instructions

1. Shop for original seating and accent tables, or retro-inspired copies. Limit the number of pieces to reflect the minimalism of modern decor. Look for accent tables made of glass and black or silver metal. Repurpose a vintage television for an entertainment center in a living room.

2. Paint the room a color that will accentuate the upholstery. Create a geometric floor pattern using carpet tiles before moving the furniture in. Install track lighting, for general room illumination, along with accent lighting.

3. Move large furniture into the room first. Create conversation areas around architectural elements such as windows or a fireplace. Position accent tables around seating to reinforce the room arrangement.

4. Layer in vintage accessories like a jukebox, LP record player and lava lamp. Hang framed vintage movie posters on the walls. Display a vintage perfume bottle collection.
