"Grease" Decoration Ideas

Capture the nostalgia and innocence of the 1950s with poodle skirts and soda shops.

Bring back the rockin' sock-hop days of the "Grease" age with decorations that would make Danny and Sandy proud. Pink Lady jackets and poodle skirts combine with jukeboxes, records and car cutouts to create a diner or soda shop complete with checkered or pink and teal accents. Glittery chrome accessories complement the soda shop look as well as help create a mock-up of "Greased Lightnin'."

Colors and Music

Records, music notes and jukeboxes set the stage for a sock hop style party, especially when coupled with pastel pink, seafoam green and robin egg blue. Black and white checkered tablecloths mix with Rydell High red napkins, cups and plates for a scene evocative of the "National Bandstand" dance-off.

Greased Lightnin' and Cars

Cardboard car cutouts offer guests a chance to be photographed driving "Greased Lightnin'," while images of classic Cadillacs, Buicks and Chevrolets pay homage to the love and car given to each car built in the 1950s. Trace car shapes on black craft paper and use as life-size wall decor, especially when accented with tinfoil "chrome" on hubcaps and fins.

Pink Ladies and T-Birds

Whether your guests are Pink Ladies or T-Birds, offer them fun decor throughout the space, such as cutouts of leather jackets and paintings or prints of the T-Bird and Pink Lady logos. Silhouettes of poodle skirts, greasers wearing fitted pants and images of saddle shoes celebrate the fashion of the time and create simple, inexpensive decorations.

Movie Scenes

Whether you decorate for the dance-off or the end-of-school carnival, employ scenes from the movie -- and play -- in your decor. Use red and white for Rydell High, and use plenty of crepe paper streamers and balloons to keep the innocent, upbeat feeling of the 50s alive. Cutouts and silhouettes of carnival rides, soda fountains and diner stools round out the decor.
