Halloween Birthday Ideas

Put the spotlight on the birthday person and away from the pumpkin.

Sharing your birthday with a major holiday can be a real drag. Rather than the focus being on you, and your big day, it is typically on the big holiday, with your birthday being relegated to more of an afterthought. If you are one of the unfortunate who suffers a Halloween birthday, don't despair, there are some spooktacular ways to share the limelight with the jack-o-lanterns, that will leave you grinning ear to ear.

Invitations

A baby blue envelope at Halloween time is an unexpected surprise.

As you well know, if you have ever thrown or been invited to any type of event, the invitations set the tone and expectation for what the party will be like. At a time of year when people are expecting to receive tons of black and orange colored invites, requesting their presence at one Halloween soiree or another, you can make your birthday stand out by having a decidedly Un-Halloween invitation.

Choose colors that one would never associate with Halloween or even fall, such as pastel colors, red, white and blue, or even pinks or greens. Take your cues from other times of year, and you are pretty well guaranteed that your invitation will stand out in the mailbox.

Theme

At Halloween, people have certain expectations of what they will be doing at any party. They will expect apple-bobbing, pumpkin carving and costume contests. Take people by surprise by offering none of the usual spooky gimmicks. Have an unexpected theme, like a luau, or a 1950s sock-hop theme instead. Most themes will allow your Halloween die-hard guests to still indulge their desire to don a costume of some sort, while not strictly being a "costume" party.

Favors

The amount of candy that one lugs home at Halloween is the general hallmark of how successful a Halloween it was. Although candy makes an easy and inexpensive favor gift, it will hardly be noticed at this time of the year. Choose a favor that sticks very strictly with your theme, like a pair of personalized bobby-socks for a sock hop party, or a grass skirt and lei for a luau. A tongue in cheek alternative that works well for an adult's Halloween season birthday party is a toothbrush, toothpaste and dental floss to help ward off all of the cavities that are sure to be brought on by the spoils of all of the other parties they will attend during Halloween.

Special Touches

No matter how you choose to plan your Halloween birthday party, adding a dramatic flair to certain otherwise simple elements can really elevate your party from good to a truly memorable event.

Take the time to find a really talented baker and have a statement cake made. Be sure that your cake truly reflects the theme and feel of your party. For a sock-hop, go with a jukebox shaped cake. For a luau, try a layer cake with a top layer that is covered in silk flowers, a middle layer that echoes a coconut bra and a bottom layer that looks like a grass skirt. People will remember such special touches and they will truly set your birthday apart from Halloween.
