What Is a Digital Ballast?
A digital ballast is a type of electrical ballast that regulates the amount of electric current in a device. These types of ballasts use microprocessors to control the electric current so it can be regulated through the use of firmware installed in the microprocessor. Also known as digital high-intensity discharge (DHID) devices, digital ballasts are used in lamps and other types of lighting.

Because these devices can conserve electricity quite well and are environmentally friendly, they are often used for lighting on city streets and other large public facilities, such as sports stadiums and airports.

Digital ballasts generally weigh about 10 pounds depending on what kind of light they are designed to power. Most of the older-generation magnetic ballasts can weigh up to 40 or 50 pounds.
