Fix Tunes By Having An Unknown Data Format

A file format tells your computer which program can play a file. Files can be given any extension, but a program will not play a file with an incorrect or unknown extension. An unknown extension is one that your audio player does not recognize. If you have a music file that is listed as an unknown (i.e., non-audio) file type, you will not be able to play the music file with an audio player. Rename the file extension to MP3 to fix the problem and play the file in an audio player.

Instructions

1. Open "My Computer" to browse for the music file using Windows Explorer. A music file downloaded from the Internet is in your "Downloads" folder.

2. Highlight the file you want to rename, and click "Organize" from the left side of the top menu then "Folder Options." Click the "View" tab, and uncheck "Hide Extension for Known File Types."

3. Right-click the music file then select "Rename." Replace the incorrect extension with ".MP3" then hit "Enter."

4. Play the file as an MP3 to make sure it works.
