Registered trademark symbol
A brand logo is the element that identifies a company's product or service to the public. The brand logo is a trademarked image, or text and image combination. It's a crucial component of a company's personality. Identifying a company brand logo is usually not difficult, since many companies proudly display that logo. Learning properly identify a brand logo and give attribute to the logo if you use it might save you from finding yourself in a courtroom for an infringement suit.
Instructions
1. Look for an R with a circle around it. This is the first, and easiest way to identify a brand name company logo. The R is short for racol, which stands for registered and authorized company logo. This registered trademark is usually to the right of the company's trademarked logo. This notification signifies that the trademark has been registered with the United States Patent and Trademark Office.
2. Look for the letters TM next to an image, or image and text combination. The TM often follows the logo, just like the registered trademark symbol, but there is an important difference. This TM tells you the logo you're looking at is a trademarked logo, but it also tells you the trademark hasn't been officially registered. While this notice holds some legal weight, any company wishing to fully protect their trademark should register it.
3. Identify service marks by locating the letters SM beside the logo. A service mark is similar to a trademark and can become a trademark if registered with the United States Patent and Trademark Office. The main difference between a service mark and a trademark is that the service mark identifies the logo for a business that provides a service rather than a product.
4. Look for these symbols to help you identify brand logos. When in doubt, you can be safe in assuming that any image, or text and image combination that identifies and is associated with a company is probably trademarked.
