Install Rockbox Firmware On A Music Player

Install Rockbox Firmware on an MP3 player

Although some of us are quite fond of our MP3 user interfaces, some might prefer a snazzier, more modern interface for aging MP3 players. Rockbox helps bring the look of your old MP3 player up to date with the newer models--without having to spend money on a completely new player.

Instructions

1. Go to the Rockbox website and go to the navigation bar on the left. Find the "manuals" link and click on it. Here you will find an organized list of all the MP3 devices that can use the Rockbox software.

2. Click on the picture of your device to open the manual; table of contents. Click on the "Installation" link, which is second link from the top.

3. Download the required firmware components. Most MP3 players will only require the Rockbox firmware (which can be downloaded from their website), but others may require additional bootloading software. If this is the case, there should be links (or instructions) in the manual for download.

4. Connect your MP3 player to your computer using your usual USB Drive. Make sure the computer recognizes the MP3 player before proceeding.

5. Download the Rockbox Utility from the website. This is the installation program and will use the components that you downloaded previously to install the full program on your MP3 player.

6. Double-click on the program to run the installer. You will be prompted to select the type of install you want to run. Select the automated installation if you want Rockbox install these components automatically, or the manual installation if you want to install everything yourself.

7. Reset your device by either completely turning it off or performing a "hard reset" if you own an iPod. Refer back to the installation manual if you are unsure of do this.
