Archos 604 Instructions

Archos 604

While never garnering the acclaim of the Apple iPod, Archos has been making feature-laden MP3 players for over a decade. With the 604, Archos has brought full multimedia capabilities to a portable device. Here are some basic instructions on operating the Archos 604.

Connect Your Archos 604 to Your Computer

Connect the supplied USB cable to the Archos 604 and plug the other end of the cable into your computer. If you are are connecting to a Windows PC, the 604 will ask you if you want to connect as a Windows Media device, a PC hard drive or charge only. Select "Windows Media Device" if you want to use Windows Media Player to access your 604. If you want to drag and drop files to the device, select "PC Hard Drive." Selecting "Charge Only" will use the USB connection to charge the device.

If you are using a Mac, only PC hard drive mode is recognized. Make sure your OS X version has mass storage device support. Connect the 604 with the USB cable, select "PC Hard Drive" and the 604 will be mounted on the desktop.

Transfer Music, Videos and Photos

To transfer music, videos or photos to your Archos 604 using a Windows PC, you can sync the device through Window Media Player 10 (or higher). You can also open Windows Explorer and drag and drop files to the appropriate folders on the 604. Make sure the files are in a format compatible with the Archos 604. If they are not, most formats can be transcoded through Window Media Player to an Archos compatible format. Be sure to read the 604's documentation to see which formats are compatible.

Since a Mac recognizes the Archos 604 as a hard drive, only dragging and dropping files to the 604 will work. The Archos 604 is not recognized by iTunes.

Play Your Media

Highlight the appropriate icon from the home screen for the media you wish to play and press "OK." You can choose a list format to view you media, which, for instance, will show you all of the videos in your Video folder. Select "Video List" for videos, "ARCLibrary" for music and "Photo Library" for photos. The list method will not show you any files in subfolders. You can also select a Windows Explorer-like interface that will show you files located in subfolders, but without additional information like cover art, thumbnails or ID3 tags. Browse your media in either format and highlight the video, song or picture you want and press "OK." The 604's side buttons allow for playback control.

Charging Your Archos 604

The Archos 604 has an included rechargeable battery. Charge the battery by connecting it your computer with the included USB cable. Once the 604 is plugged in and charging, a lightning bolt symbol will appear over the battery icon. The "CHG" indicator LED on the 604 also lights up, and it will blink red when the device has fully charged. Should the battery fail, replacement batteries can be ordered from Archos.
