Kill A Procedure With No Pid Number

The Linux and Unix operating systems use process ID numbers to keep track of each running command, application or daemon. The kernel assigns system resources to each process using the PID. If you want to stop a particular process and it is not responding to the typical stop commands, you can "kill" it. If you don't know the PID number, you can use the "pkill" command. The "pkill" searches for a particular character string and kills all processes that match the string.

Instructions

1. Open a terminal or log in to the computer via an SSH session.

2. Type the command "su -" to become the root user. If the process has been started by you, using your own user account, you can skip this step.

3. Type the command "pkill process_name" to kill a process using its name. Replace "process_name" with the name of the process. For example, type "pkill firefox" to stop all instances of the Firefox Web browser.

4. Type the command "exit" to close the root session.
