My Ringback Tone Will not Work

Cell phone ringtones

Ringback tones are songs or other audibles that are heard by callers when they dial your number, instead of the typical ring. Many mobile-phone providers now offer this feature, and some have special settings to allow for specific ringback songs for certain people, groups of people, or even days of the week. However, as with any technology, sometimes there are problems getting this service to work properly. Exact troubleshooting options will vary from provider to provider and phone to phone, but there are some general things you can try to ensure that yours works properly.

Instructions

1. Make sure you have signed up for the ringback service. Often it is an added feature for cell-phone plans, usually costing anywhere from $1 to $5 a month. If you have not added the service to your plan, you can do so on your account web page, by calling customer service or possibly on your phone itself.

2. Choose a specific ringback tone. The default is usually classical music, so if you do not download and select another, you will have the default. Make sure to select the option to "Apply as My Ringback" (or variation depending on your provider) after downloading the tone.

3. Find the ringback-tone portion of your provider's online store or account-management system. Manage your downloaded tones or songs from here; change defaults and assigned songs. For example, with Verizon, you can select the "My Settings" tab on the home page, go to the section called "My Default Ringback Tone" and click "Modify". A new page will appear with a drop-down box that holds all of the songs you have purchased. Select your song and click "Save."

4. Download an app to manage your ringback tones from your phone if you have a smartphone and your provider offers the app. Verizon offers the VZW Tones app, from which you can manage ringbacks and adjust specific settings as you can on the website.

5. Find out if you purchased your ringback tone over a year ago. Most ringback songs are licensed and will expire after one year, meaning you will have to redownload the tone.
