Party Suggestions For Sock Hop Rock And 50s Rock

Your guests can twist the night away when you plan a 50s sock hop theme party. Capitalize on the 50s fads, pastimes and icons when planning the party. Adults and children can enjoy eating, drinking and having a great time during a sock hop. As a party favor, extend a coonskin cap to each party-goer in celebration of the fad honoring by Davy Crockett.

Music and Games

The 50s were all about having good, clean fun with friends at the area hang-out. Incorporate a twist contest, hula-hoop contest and Elvis impersonation contest for your competitive guests. Give each guest a yo-yo to display their talents and tricks. Play songs from only the 50s and early 60s for guests and hire a dance instructor to teach guests do the Stroll, the Bop and the Hand Jive.

Decorations

Adorn the party room with items reminiscent of the 50s. Consider renting a a working jukebox if you can find one in your area. In lieu of a jukebox, hire a disc jockey to play 50s music for guests to dance and mingle to. If the budget allows, hire a 50s diner with a traditional soda bar, vinyl booths and a black and white-checkered dance floor area. Alternatively, decorate your own kitchen with checkered table cloths, vinyl records on the walls, cafe tables and traditional napkin holders.

Food and Drink

Traditional diner food including hamburgers, hot dogs, fries and soda pop in clear glass bottles are appropriate for a 50s sock hop. Consider including a sundae, milkshake and root beer float bar and hire a soda jerk to serve the sweet treats. Serve the food in a plastic basket with disposable parchment paper liners. When planning the party to include a large buffet-style dinner option, include finger foods such as deli sandwiches, chicken wings and mini-pizzas.

Costumes

Invite each party attendee to dress in a clothes from the 1950s such as a hoop or poodle skirt, lettermen's sweater, leather jacket or tight blue jeans. Many men in the 50s styled their hair with a greased-back look, and women often went for a wavy short style or a ponytail with a scarf matching her outfit for the ladies. Or ask guests to come dressed as a 50s icon such as Elvis Presley, Frankie Avalon, Annette Funicello or Dwight D. Eisenhower. Children can emulate characters from the traditional Mickey Mouse club fad by wearing mouse-ear headbands.
