A jukebox helps you set the scene at a sock hop party.
Sock hops in high school gyms were a staple of the 1950s. Before entering the gym to dance, teens took off their shoes to protect the floor. Celebrate the era, along with its music, clothes and food, with a sock hop party of your own.
Instructions
1. Rent a jukebox for both entertainment and decoration. The jukebox was a big part of the '50s, supplying teens with their favorite tunes. If you can't find a real jukebox, rent or buy an inflatable one and hide a CD player behind it. Prepare some '50s music or the soundtrack from "Grease."
2. Send your guests '50s-themed invitations two to three weeks before the party. Buy old vinyl records. Write the party details on card stock, and glue or tape them to the records. Or make cardboard invitations shaped like vinyl records. Ask your guests to come in appropriate attire, such as poodle skirts, leather jackets, cuffed jeans and saddle shoes.
3. Set your sock hop scene. Cover a table with black-and-white checkered cloth, and place vinyl records in random places. Cut out paper silhouettes of sock hop dancers and classic cars and tape them to the walls. Buy life-sized cardboard replicas of celebrities from the 1950s, such as Elvis and James Dean.
4. Prepare simple diner fare for your guests. Buy frozen fries and frozen onion rings, along with hot dogs, burger patties, buns and ice cream days before the party. When the guests start arriving, grill up the hot dogs and burgers and put the fries and onion rings in the oven. Have a friend start making shakes, topped with whipped cream and cherries. Have another friend dress up as a roller-skating waitress to take the food and drinks to your guests.
5. Play 1950s music and have a twist or limbo contest. Get the guests to answer a "Grease" quiz and lip sync to the soundtrack. Have a minidrag race using toy cars, lining them up on a smooth surface and waving a scarf as the start sign. Have yo-yos and hula hoops available for your guests to try out.
