Music on the Web
Does it seem that every person on the planet has a website music player except you? Well, thanks to the magic of Flash-powered MP3 players, you can add one to your website too. Although some advanced players might require a little JavaScript knowledge, there are plenty of other players which require little or no coding skills. Legions of Flash developers have already done the hard part by creating the players for you. Now, all you have to do is find one that you like and add it to your site.
Instructions
Adding an MP3 Player to Your Website
1. Choose a player type. "Simple" players are easier to set up, but they can only play a single MP3 at a time. "Advanced" players, on the other hand, allow you to display jukebox-style playlists from which a site visitor can choose a variety of songs. If you have no need for such a full-featured player, get a simple one instead. The download site will tell you whether its MP3 player supports playlists.
2. Download an MP3 player from the Internet. Wimpy, Flabell and JW (see Resources) are just a few of the popular brands. And, many more can be found by searching the Web using a search string similar to this one: web MP3 player. Because players come in many shapes, sizes and colors, you will have a wide variety from which to choose.
3. Update your HTML. In your download package, you can usually find a complete example of an HTML file containing all the changes needed to make your particular player work. Some players may even contain a setup wizard which will generate the code for you. If you download a simple player, the instructions that come with it will explain add a block of HTML code similar to this:
These OBJECT and EMBED tags (see References) enable you to specify a player's width, height, background color and much more. There is no need to memorize this code because each player will set up its values in a slightly different way.
4. This step will only apply if you download an advanced player which uses playlists. If this is the case, you will need to add an XML file to your website. This XML file will be used to store the names of the MP3 files in your playlist. Finally, your advanced player download package will include a JavaScript file which you will not have to modify. Details about perform all of these steps will be found in your player's documentation.
5. Upload your files to your website. After you get the player working locally on your hard drive, upload all files to your Web server. Be sure to include the XML and any JavaScript files that may have been used.
