Remove Dead Tracks From An Ipod device

Avoid dead tracks on your iPod by cleaning up your iTunes library.

Listening to your iPod or iTunes library with dead tracks is bothersome and annoying. To get rid of these missing songs, you can set up a few playlists that help to locate all your dead tracks. Once the missing files are batched together in one place, you can quickly delete the track listings in a single action. You will need to set up a static playlist and two smart playlists. In iTunes, a smart playlist is a list that is created automatically based on specific parameters and variables. If you have never created a smart playlist, do not fret, because they are easy to make.

Instructions

1. Launch the iTunes program from your desktop or "Programs" menu.

2. Go to the "File" menu and select "New Smart Playlist." Set the rules to be "Artist," "is not" and "123456789." Essentially, the final value can be any artist name that is not listed or expected to be listed in your iTunes library. Make sure the "Live updating" box is checked and click "OK."

3. Name the smart playlist as "All Files."

4. Go to the "File" menu and click "New Playlist." Name the static playlist as "All Live Files."

5. Click "File" and select "New Smart Playlist." Enter the values to match as "Playlist," "is not" and "All Live Files." Click the "+" button and enter a second set of values to match "Playlist," "is" and "All Files." Hit "OK."

6. Name the smart playlist as "Missing Files."

7. Go to the "All Files" playlist and select the songs. Drag the grouped files to the "All Live Files" playlist. When you hover over the playlist, a document icon will appear, which means it is safe to release the mouse button.

8. Go to the "Missing Files" playlist. All your dead tracks will appear on this list. Select the files and hit "Shift" and "Del" to remove the tracks. Confirm by clicking "Remove."

9. Connect your iPod to the computer with the USB connector cable. Sync the music player from iTunes as you normally would.
