Retro Ideas

An old-fashioned phone helps create a retro feel in any room.

Whether you're nostalgic for days gone by or you simply enjoy the distinctive designs of a different era, you can create an ambiance of yesteryear by decorating your home in a retro style. Add one or two vintage elements to a room or completely convert your entire home to the look of a previous decade. Regardless of your choice, stick to the same retro era in each room for continuity.

1950s

The 1950s was a time known for jukeboxes, diners and drive-in movies. This retro theme translates well in a kitchen, movie room and game room. Many companies manufacture appliances like stoves, refrigerators and toasters that function with the latest technology on the inside, but look like they came from the 1950s on the outside. For countertops, use brightly colored Formica. Black-and-white checkered floors are perfect for the 50s style. Instead of a kitchen table, install a diner booth. Accent your walls with old records, framed albums and other vintage items from the era.

1960s

According to the website Retro Housewife, home decor of the 1960s was highly influenced by the rapid industrialization of Western society. Furniture tended toward minimalist, modular items. While you can add a retro 1960s feel to just about any room, the living room works especially well with this style. You can find actual furniture from the 1960s by searching vintage shops and second-hand stores or purchase new furniture designed in a retro style. Stick to items made of metal for things like coffee tables and side tables. For upholstered furniture, solid colors and clean shapes add to the 60s retro feel.

1970s

In the 1970s, wacky wallpaper with bright, bold patters was commonplace in homes. If the idea of placing this on all four walls of a room is too much, choose an accent wall for the paper and paint the remaining walls in a neutral color. Furniture colors in this era trended toward olives, drab oranges and browns. This type of retro design style can work well in a living room or bedroom. Use accent pieces in these colors and add decorative pieces like a shag rug and a lava lamp.
