Retro Promenade Styles

Hang up some disco balls for a '70s themed prom.

For an interesting prom theme, look to the past and go vintage. Retro prom themes celebrate years gone by that had their own styles and music. Mine these eras with a prom theme that is different. Consult relatives who lived through the chosen time for decorating advice.

Grease

Have a prom inspired by the classic movie set in the 1950s. Men can wear their hair slicked back and leather jackets instead of tuxes, and women can wear the fluffy, feminine dresses that were popular during this era. Music can be all hits from the fabulous '50s, such as Elvis Presley, Buddy Holly and Fats Domino. Serve hamburgers, hot dogs and milkshakes to simulate a diner environment and hang high school pennants and posters on the walls. A real jukebox would be a great addition to the decorations for this prom theme.

Disco

Bring back the '70s with a disco-themed prom. Decorations can include lots of disco balls, lava lamps and anything glittery or shiny. Music is all about disco, with artists such as the Bee Gees, the Village People, Donna Summer and the Commodores. Use strobe lights to create a disco dance floor and encourage guests to dress in pantsuits, shimmery outfits and retro jackets.

Old Hollywood

Re-create the glamor of old Hollywood with a theme that focuses on legends such as Clark Gable, Vivien Leigh, Katherine Hepburn and the era that made sophistication popular. Decorations can be lush and use colors such as red, black and gold. Hang up Hollywood signs and cutouts of Academy Awards. Roll out a red carpet for guests to walk on when they arrive. Women can dress elegantly, wearing feather boas, hats and heels, while men can wear stylish tuxes, hats and smoking jackets. Serve punch in martini glasses and play big band and swing music to create a nightclub atmosphere.

Peace and Love

Celebrate the '60s with a Woodstock-themed prom. Guests can dress like hippies and wear tie-dyed outfits, accessorize with round glasses and peace sign necklaces, and enjoy decorations that are heavy on flowers and psychedelic posters. Use lots of colors, natural decor such as potted trees and artificial garlands and play popular tunes from the era of love such as Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin and the Doors. Have a costume contest for best or most authentic-looking outfit.
